Google's Gemini AI Labeled 'High Risk' for Kids by Common Sense Media
Google's Gemini AI has been rated as 'high risk' for children and teens by Common Sense Media, according to a recent report. The assessment highlights that the AI's 'Under 13' and 'Teen Experience' tiers are essentially adult versions with additional safety features, rather than being designed specifically for younger users.
The report points out that Gemini can still expose children to inappropriate content, including topics related to sex, drugs, and mental health advice, which may not be suitable for their age. This is particularly concerning given recent incidents where AI interactions have been linked to teen suicides.
Common Sense Media emphasizes that AI platforms for kids should be built with their developmental needs in mind, rather than adapting adult-oriented products. Despite Google's efforts to implement safety measures, the organization found that the AI's design flaws and lack of age-appropriate guidance contribute to its high-risk rating.
In response, Google has acknowledged the concerns and stated that it is working on improving its safety features. The company claims to have specific policies and safeguards for users under 18 and is consulting with experts to enhance its protections.
