Google to Buy Carbon Removal Credits from AMP’s AI Waste Processing

Google has signed a multiyear agreement with AMP Robotics to purchase carbon removal credits generated through AI-powered organic waste processing, targeting the removal of 200,000 metric tonnes of CO2e by 2030.

Google has signed a multiyear agreement with AMP Robotics to purchase carbon removal credits generated through its AI-powered organic waste processing, announced in a press release. The deal, one of Google's largest of its kind, aims to remove 200,000 metric tonnes of CO2e by 2030 and support efforts to reduce methane emissions from landfills.

AMP’s technology uses AI-based sortation to recover recyclable materials and organic waste from municipal solid waste. Instead of decomposing in landfills and releasing methane, the organic material is converted into biochar, a stable carbon-storing material that prevents emissions for centuries.

The agreement will help AMP expand biochar production capacity at what is described as the largest recycling project in the United States. The company plans to process 540,000 tons of municipal waste each year at a facility in Virginia, diverting half of it from landfills and avoiding or removing over 378,000 tons of CO2 annually.

Beyond carbon removal, AMP and Google will develop frameworks to measure the impact of combining waste diversion with biochar production, supporting scalability across the waste management sector.
