Australia and UK Sign Agreement to Strengthen AI Safety Cooperation

The Australian and UK governments have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to deepen collaboration on AI safety, security, and governance through their national AI institutes.

The Australian Government and the UK Government have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding to enhance cooperation on the safe and responsible development and use of artificial intelligence, announced in a joint media release.

The agreement was signed during the visit of UK Minister for AI and Online Safety Kanishka Narayan to Australia, alongside Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy Dr Andrew Charlton. It establishes closer collaboration between the Australian AI Safety Institute and the UK AI Security Institute.

Under the MoU, both countries will share expertise and information on emerging AI risks, conduct joint research to measure and manage AI system risks, and support the International Network for Advanced AI Measurement, Evaluation and Science. The partnership aims to improve testing and monitoring of AI systems and ensure effective safeguards.

The MoU aligns with Australia’s National AI Plan, which includes the creation of the AI Safety Institute to monitor and assess AI technologies and their potential impacts.
