Amazon Unveils Alexa+ with Enhanced AI Capabilities
Amazon has unveiled Alexa+, a new and improved version of its voice assistant, at an event in New York. The upgraded Alexa is powered by generative AI technologies and features a "model agnostic" system that selects the best AI model for each task. This development was highlighted by Amazon's devices and services chief, Panos Panay, who described it as a "complete re-architecture" of the AI assistant.
Alexa+ can perform a variety of tasks, such as answering questions based on a user's Amazon account, notifying users about new concert tickets, and assisting with dinner reservations. It also integrates tightly with Amazon's smart home ecosystem, allowing users to control devices and manage entertainment options seamlessly.
The new Alexa is equipped with visual understanding capabilities, enabling it to process video feeds and respond to questions based on the footage. It can also summarize footage from Ring security cameras, acting as a virtual security guard. Additionally, Alexa+ can read, summarize, and recall lengthy documents, providing answers to user queries based on uploaded files.
Amazon's VP Daniel Rausch explained that Alexa+ leverages the company's Bedrock cloud platform and uses models from Amazon's Nova family and partners like Anthropic. This collaboration with Anthropic was confirmed in a recent social media post by the company.
Alexa+ is designed to be a productivity tool, capable of parsing and referring to uploaded files and emails. It can also coordinate multiple services, such as making dinner reservations and booking transportation, through its "experts" system. The Alexa AI Multi-Agent SDK will soon be available in preview, allowing developers to tap into these functionalities.
