Researchers are advancing artificial intelligence to interpret animal emotions, according to TechCrunch. One notable project is the Intellipig system, developed by scientists at the University of the West of England Bristol and Scotland's Rural College. This system analyzes photos of pigs' faces to alert farmers to signs of pain, sickness, or emotional distress.

Another team at the University of Haifa is working on AI that can identify discomfort in dogs' faces, leveraging their previous work in facial recognition software used to locate lost dogs. This AI focuses on the 38% of facial movements that dogs share with humans.

Additionally, a researcher at the University of São Paulo has trained an AI system to detect pain in horses by analyzing their facial features before and after surgery and medication. This system achieved an 88% success rate in identifying pain indicators by focusing on the eyes, ears, and mouths of the horses.
