Accel Closes $550 Million India Fund for AI and Other Startups
Accel has closed an oversubscribed $550 million India fund as part of a $3.5 billion global fundraising effort, according to TechCrunch. The fund closed within weeks, 19 months after Accel raised its previous $650 million India fund.
Accel still has more than 55% of the earlier India fund available for investment, people familiar with the matter told TechCrunch. The firm expects to start deploying capital from the new fund in 2027 and will keep investing from the prior fund until then.
The firm plans to invest in AI, consumer internet, fintech, advanced manufacturing, and deep tech startups in India. Accel partners told TechCrunch that they see Indian AI startups focusing on applications, infrastructure, and software built on existing models rather than competing with foundation model companies.
The India fund was one of four funds Accel raised at the same time, alongside dedicated U.S. and Europe funds and a $1.35 billion growth fund. Accel said the growth fund can back companies from any of its regional funds, including India.
