Shell's Cooling Fluids Certified by Intel for Data Centers

May 13, 2025
Shell's immersion cooling fluids have received certification from Intel, marking an industry first for data center cooling solutions.

Shell has achieved a significant milestone with its immersion cooling fluids, which have become the first to receive official certification from a major chip manufacturer, Intel. This certification allows Shell's innovative cooling solutions to be confidently used in data centers worldwide, announced in a press release.

The collaboration between Shell and Intel over the past two years has led to the certification of Shell's immersion cooling fluids, which promise to transform data center cooling by reducing energy use by up to 48% and cutting capital and operating expenses by up to 33%. Extensive testing by Intel confirmed that their Xeon processors remain reliable when using Shell's fluids, comparable to traditional air-cooled systems.

Immersion cooling involves submerging servers and networking equipment in electrically non-conductive fluid, which absorbs and dissipates heat more efficiently than air-cooling. This method eliminates the need for traditional cooling systems like fans and chillers, potentially reducing the floor space required for data centers by up to 80%.

Shell's immersion cooling fluids are already in use at their data centers in Houston and Amsterdam and are designed to operate in various climates, including hot and humid environments. This development aligns with Shell's strategy to expand its portfolio of high-value products while supporting customers in reducing emissions.
