Perplexity Open Sources SPACE Agent Sandbox
Perplexity AI open sources SPACE, the sandbox platform that powers its Computer agent, as detailed in a company blog post. The platform provides isolated code execution, session recovery, pause and resume controls, and workspace branching.
Each SPACE sandbox runs inside a small virtual machine with its own operating system. The platform keeps network controls and credentials outside the sandbox, while snapshots and checkpoints preserve files and running state across interruptions.
Perplexity says SPACE has handled millions of sandbox creations per day since July and created sandboxes three to five times faster than its previous provider under the same production traffic. Its security evaluation recorded no escape from the virtual machine to the host across 108 attempts. Test agents found ways around some network restrictions, which Perplexity says it fixed before follow up testing.
CoreWeave and Akamai have tested and launched SPACE on their cloud platforms, while Crusoe plans to add it to its Managed AI Services portfolio. Developers can deploy SPACE using the repository's setup instructions and security guidance.
