OpenAI Urges US to Lead Global AI Standards

OpenAI is calling for the US government to lead the creation of international technical standards for advanced AI, as detailed in a company blog post. The company proposes coordination through the U.S. Department of Commerce and its Center for AI Standards and Innovation.

The proposal calls for common methods to measure model capabilities, assess risks and evaluate safeguards. It also recommends standards for human oversight of automated AI research and shared protocols for classifying, reporting and responding to incidents involving alignment or self improving systems.

OpenAI says the standards would not require licenses, government approval or mandatory reviews before model releases. Individual governments would decide whether to add them to national laws. The proposal also asks governments and critical infrastructure operators to establish secure channels for sharing vulnerabilities, threats and national security concerns.
