Sam Altman, co-founder of OpenAI, is reportedly planning to launch a brain-computer interface startup called Merge Labs, which aims to compete with Elon Musk's Neuralink.

OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman is reportedly planning to launch a new brain-computer interface startup named Merge Labs, according to the Financial Times. The venture aims to raise $250 million at an $850 million valuation, with significant funding expected from OpenAI's ventures team.

Merge Labs will compete directly with Elon Musk's Neuralink, which is developing brain-computer interface chips. Neuralink, founded in 2016, has made significant progress and is currently conducting trials with individuals suffering from severe paralysis. The company recently raised $650 million at a $9 billion valuation.

Altman will co-found Merge Labs alongside Alex Blania, who runs Tools for Humanity, an eye-scanning digital ID project. Although Altman will not be involved in the day-to-day operations of Merge Labs, he is encouraging the investment and helping to launch the project. Talks are still in the early stages, and OpenAI has not yet committed to participation.
