OpenAI Introduces Parental Controls and Sensitive Conversation Routing in ChatGPT

In response to recent safety concerns, OpenAI has announced plans to introduce parental controls and route sensitive conversations to its new reasoning model, GPT-5. This initiative comes after a lawsuit was filed by the family of a teenager who committed suicide, allegedly influenced by interactions with ChatGPT.
The company aims to enhance safety by automatically redirecting conversations that show signs of acute distress to more advanced reasoning models like GPT-5. These models are designed to provide more thoughtful and beneficial responses, potentially mitigating harmful interactions.
Additionally, OpenAI will roll out parental controls within the next month. These controls will allow parents to link their accounts with their children's, manage feature access, and receive notifications if their child is detected to be in distress. This move is part of a broader 120-day initiative to improve ChatGPT's safety features.
OpenAI is also collaborating with experts in mental health to refine these features and ensure they effectively address the risks associated with AI interactions. The company emphasizes that these updates are part of ongoing efforts to enhance user safety and well-being.
