OpenAI Introduces Astra for Law With Legal Search and Firm Controls

OpenAI introduced Astra for Law in a company post, combining GPT 6 Astra with a legal search index and instructions for legal analysis and writing. Selected law firms will receive initial access through ChatGPT and Codex, while API access will follow under the identifier gpt-6-astra-law.

The search index covers United States case law, statutes, regulations, court rules and administrative decisions across more than 230 million URLs. On 200 questions from a private Vals AI Legal Research Bench validation set, Astra for Law passed the overall correctness check on 54.0% of questions, compared with 38.7% for GPT 6 Astra using web search alone at the highest reasoning setting.

API customers including Harvey and Legora will be able to add the system to their products. Eligible firms can receive Zero Data Retention for API use, while ChatGPT Enterprise usage is excluded from human review by default.

OpenAI also released 26 plugins that connect ChatGPT with legal tools including Relativity, Clio, iManage, Intapp and HighQ. ChatGPT for Word is now generally available for proofreading, suggested edits and formatting checks.
