OpenAI Disrupts Covert Influence Operations Linked to China
OpenAI has dismantled 10 covert influence operations that were leveraging its generative AI tools, with four of these operations likely linked to the Chinese government, according to NPR. These operations utilized ChatGPT to generate social media posts and comments, as well as internal documents and marketing materials.
One operation, dubbed "Sneer Review," used ChatGPT to post comments across platforms like TikTok, X, Reddit, and Facebook in multiple languages, including English, Chinese, and Urdu. The operation aimed to create a false impression of organic engagement by generating posts and corresponding comments.
Another operation involved posing as journalists and analysts to collect intelligence, using ChatGPT to write posts and translate communications. OpenAI's report also highlighted operations originating from Russia, Iran, and other countries, which were largely disrupted before reaching significant audiences.
