OpenAI is exploring the possibility of establishing a data center in South Korea, as announced during the launch of its new office in the country.

OpenAI is considering the development of a data center in South Korea, as revealed during the launch of its South Korean office. This marks the company's third office in Asia and its 12th globally. OpenAI's Chief Strategy Officer, Jason Kwon, indicated that the company is open to partnerships for the construction of the data center.

Kwon mentioned potential collaborations with major South Korean conglomerates such as Samsung and SK Telecom, aligning with the Korean government's efforts to achieve AI sovereignty. While no specific details regarding the size or timing of the investment were disclosed, the company is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Seoul National University for joint AI research.

This initiative is part of OpenAI's broader strategy to expand its AI infrastructure globally, following similar projects in the UAE and Norway under the "OpenAI for Countries" program. Earlier reports also suggested plans for a data center in India as part of the Stargate project, which aims to invest $500 billion in AI infrastructure over the next four years.
