Nestlé and IBM Use AI for Sustainable Packaging

Nestlé and IBM have developed a generative AI tool to create sustainable packaging materials, aiming to reduce waste and enhance food protection.

Nestlé and IBM have collaborated to develop a generative AI tool designed to create sustainable high-barrier packaging materials. This initiative aims to address the challenge of finding packaging solutions that are both robust and environmentally friendly, announced on their website.

The AI tool utilizes advanced chemical modeling and generative technology to suggest new material formulations that protect food from moisture, oxygen, and temperature fluctuations. This approach significantly reduces the time traditionally required for such research, which can take years.

By compiling a comprehensive database of known materials, Nestlé and IBM trained a chemical language model to understand molecular structures and their properties. IBM's regression transformer model then analyzed these features to propose new packaging compounds that meet performance, safety, and environmental criteria.

This collaboration is part of Nestlé's broader strategy to embed AI across its operations, including recipe optimization and manufacturing efficiency improvements through digital twins. The company aims to leverage this technology to identify future packaging materials that are cost-effective, recyclable, and functional.
