MIT Technology Review Insights Report Links AI Success to Data Sovereignty
AI and data sovereignty have become the strongest indicators of enterprise AI success, announced in a press release by MIT Technology Review Insights in partnership with EnterpriseDB. The report shows that organizations deeply committed to controlling their data, infrastructure, and governance achieve five times higher returns on AI projects compared to peers.
The study surveyed more than 2,000 executives in 13 countries and conducted over 15,000 simulations. It found that over half of enterprises already have autonomous AI agents in production, making real time decisions on operational data. Security and resilience were cited by 85% of respondents as primary drivers of sovereignty efforts, followed by data localization and ownership control.
The report concludes that sovereignty is becoming the operational foundation for agentic AI systems that act and decide autonomously. It defines sovereignty as the mechanism determining which agents can access data, under what policies, and how those interactions are monitored. The analysis predicts more than one billion active AI agents by 2029.
The report also presents a framework for enterprises to implement sovereign AI within 90 days, including mapping sensitive data, setting governance controls, and creating secure environments for AI experimentation. It highlights technologies such as confidential computing, edge AI, post-quantum cryptography, and open source infrastructure like PostgreSQL as key enablers of sovereignty at scale.
