Meta Releases Muse Glimmer and Returns to Open AI Models

Meta released the open weight AI model Muse Glimmer on Monday and plans to release weights for Muse Spark in the coming weeks, according to the Financial Times. In an essay published alongside the release, Mark Zuckerberg argued that advanced AI should not be concentrated among a small number of companies and governments.

Muse Glimmer is available for developers to download and modify. Meta said Muse Spark is a more powerful model, and its weights are expected to follow later.

Zuckerberg criticized closed model strategies used by rivals including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. He also supported model distillation, a method that trains a smaller model using outputs from a stronger one.

Meta also announced a $1 billion fund for communities that host its US data centers. Zuckerberg said Meta will give its independent directors authority to approve safety criteria for model releases.
