Meta Delays New Business Terms After Publisher Pushback on AI Scraping
Meta delayed enforcement of its new business terms to Nov. 20 after publishers said the terms could let it scrape news sites for AI training, The Verge reported. The terms were due to take effect on Oct. 30.
Meta had already removed language about "training" from the terms, which it updated earlier this month, but legal experts said that did not rule out the use. The News/Media Alliance wrote to CEO Mark Zuckerberg demanding changes, and advertisers and publishers in the EU and UK urged regulators to halt the terms.
Meta spokesperson Daniel Roberts said the delay gives the company time to explain "how Meta uses web crawlers and the fact that content owners will still be able to use robots.txt to signal preferences."
