Meta Acquires 49% Stake in Scale AI for $14.8 Billion
Meta Platforms has agreed to acquire a 49% stake in AI startup Scale AI for $14.8 billion, according to The Information. This acquisition is part of Meta's strategy to bolster its AI capabilities, with Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang set to lead a new 'superintelligence' lab within Meta.
Founded in 2016, Scale AI specializes in providing labeled data crucial for AI development, serving clients like OpenAI and Microsoft. The company was valued at $13.8 billion in 2024 and generated $870 million in revenue last year, with projections to exceed $2 billion in 2025.
The deal, which is yet to be finalized, is structured to potentially avoid regulatory scrutiny, a concern for Meta given its past acquisitions. This move comes as Meta seeks to regain its competitive edge in the AI sector, following delays in releasing its 'Behemoth' AI model.
