Linux Foundation Releases OpenMDW 1.1, NVIDIA Adopts Framework for Open AI Models

Linux Foundation has announced in a press release the release of OpenMDW 1.1, an updated open license framework designed for distribution of AI models. The new version introduces a permissive licensing structure with intellectual property protections aimed at simplifying legal frameworks for open model sharing.

NVIDIA will adopt the OpenMDW 1.1 license across upcoming releases of its Cosmos, Isaac GR00T, Ising, and Nemotron model families. These models cover areas such as agentic AI, robotics, quantum computing, and simulation. The adoption provides developers with rights to train, modify, contribute, redistribute, and deploy the models under a unified framework.

OpenMDW was originally launched in 2025 by the Linux Foundation and the PyTorch Foundation to address the lack of suitable licensing for AI artifacts. The framework covers model architectures, weights, parameters, code, documentation, and data. OpenMDW 1.1 is now publicly available for adoption by AI developers and organizations worldwide.
