Kong AI Gateway 2.2 Adds MCP Access and Cost Controls

Kong made AI Gateway 2.2 generally available in Kong Konnect, the company said in a press release. The release adds controls for MCP tools, AI costs, user and agent identities, and model providers.

MCP Server Bundling places multiple MCP servers behind one Kong route and limits each caller to authorized tools. Cost management tracks text, audio, image and video usage separately, including cache reads and writes, while Headroom support provides prompt compression.

Policies for rate limits, analytics, cost attribution and access can now use an authenticated user or agent identity. The release also adds native AWS IAM authentication for Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, along with support for Kimi, Microsoft Foundry, Amazon SageMaker and Jev.
