Klarna Reduces Workforce by 40% with AI Integration
Klarna has reduced its workforce by 40%, a move attributed to the integration of artificial intelligence and natural attrition, as stated by CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski. The Swedish fintech company, known for its buy-now, pay-later services, has seen its employee count drop from approximately 5,000 to nearly 3,000. This reduction is part of Klarna's broader strategy to embrace AI technology across its operations.
In an interview with CNBC, Siemiatkowski explained that AI has taken over roles equivalent to 700 full-time customer service agents, significantly impacting the company's staffing needs. The company had previously launched an AI assistant in partnership with ChatGPT, which now handles two-thirds of its customer service interactions.
Despite the workforce reduction, Klarna has implemented a hiring freeze, allowing natural attrition to further decrease its headcount by 15-20% annually. However, Siemiatkowski also noted in a separate interview with Bloomberg that the AI-only approach led to a decline in service quality, prompting the company to consider hiring human customer service representatives again.
