Japan to Promote Domestic AI Development for National Security

The Japanese government plans to emphasize domestic artificial intelligence development in its upcoming national strategy to reduce reliance on foreign systems and strengthen security. The initiative includes measures to attract AI talent, develop advanced chips, and build a next-generation supercomputer.

The Japanese Government will prioritize domestic artificial intelligence development in a new national strategy aimed at reducing dependence on foreign AI for security purposes, reports Mainichi Japan.

The plan will focus on attracting AI professionals through improved compensation and working conditions, as well as advancing the development of cutting-edge chips and a next-generation supercomputer to succeed the existing Fugaku system operated by the Riken research institute.

An AI strategy task force held its first meeting in September, with the goal of finalizing the basic plan by the end of the year. The outline, expected later this month, will emphasize that Japan should not rely excessively on foreign players for technologies that influence national power.

The government also intends to strengthen cooperation among universities, research institutes, and private companies to share expertise and accelerate innovation. The strategy will address potential security risks from AI, including misinformation, disinformation, and cyberattacks, while aiming to make Japan a global leader in AI development and use.
