IBM Introduces Forward Deployed Units to Scale Enterprise AI Delivery
IBM announced in a press release a new delivery model called Forward Deployed Units (FDUs), aimed at accelerating how enterprises turn AI strategies into operational systems. The model is built around compact, senior teams that integrate human expertise with specialized AI agents to deliver measurable business outcomes.
Each FDU functions as a small team, or pod, combining business domain experts, architects, and engineers who work directly with client teams. The digital agents handle tasks such as coding, testing, and documentation, enabling a six-person team to perform the work typically done by much larger groups. FDUs are already being deployed at companies including Riyadh Air, Nestlé, Heineken, and Pearson, across regions such as Asia Pacific, Europe, and the United States.
IBM stated that FDUs operate on the IBM Consulting Advantage platform, which provides reusable assets, AI agents, and industry accelerators to ensure consistent delivery and governance. The company is also expanding its recruitment of forward deployed engineers and technical specialists to support the initiative.
By combining strategy, engineering, and continuous execution within a single system, IBM aims for FDUs to help clients move AI deployments from isolated pilots into scalable, production-level operations.
