Helsing and Mistral Partner to Develop AI Systems for European Defence

Helsing, a German defence technology company, and Mistral, a French AI startup, have announced a strategic partnership to develop advanced AI systems for military applications. The collaboration was unveiled at the Paris Global AI Summit on February 10, 2025.
The partnership aims to create Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models, which integrate visual perception, language understanding, and action outputs. These models are designed to improve defence platforms by enhancing their ability to understand environments, communicate with operators, and make rapid, reliable decisions in complex scenarios.
Helsing, known for its AI-powered military technology, including drones and electronic warfare capabilities, will combine its expertise with Mistral's generative AI models. This collaboration is seen as a significant step in strengthening Europe's technological leadership in AI and defence.
Both companies have received substantial funding, with Helsing raising €450 million and Mistral securing €600 million in recent rounds. The partnership reflects a growing trend in Europe to bolster military AI capabilities amid increasing geopolitical tensions.
