Greek Prime Minister Says No Government Is Ready for AI Job Losses

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis says governments and societies are unprepared for the speed of job displacement from AI, according to TechCrunch. TechCrunch reports that he sided with frontier lab leaders who have called for a slowdown. Mitsotakis said that when the people building the models say they are not sure exactly what is happening with them, especially in how they improve themselves, "we need to listen to them."

Mitsotakis said some form of AI regulation is inevitable and that the United States will largely shape it. He proposed Greece as a venue for discussions among technologists, social scientists, philosophers and historians.

The Government of the Hellenic Republic will ban social media for children under 15 starting in January, though Mitsotakis said AI companions may make that policy insufficient. Greece has also tested OpenAI tools to reduce teachers' administrative work, while Mitsotakis warned that chatbots should not replace learning basic skills.
