Epic Games uses Claude and Codex to develop Unreal Engine

Epic Games is using Claude, Codex and other AI tools to develop Unreal Engine code and features. The tools also help identify bugs and monitor Fortnite stability.

Epic Games is using AI to develop code and features for Unreal Engine, Game Developer reports, citing comments to This Week in Video Games. Executive Vice President of Development Marcus Wassmer said Claude and Codex have helped resolve cooking bugs that the company had tried to eliminate for a decade.

The tools also monitor Fortnite stability on PCs and alert Epic to driver and hardware combinations that cause problems. Wassmer said AI helps the company maintain, streamline and modernize the engine while engineers control the scope of its use.

Most current development is taking place in streams connected to Fortnite, Unreal Editor for Fortnite and Unreal Engine 6. Epic may also release Unreal Engine 5.9 as a smaller update for specific systems, including changes developed with AI.

"We are more concerned about the risks of moving too slowly than we are about AI skepticism," Wassmer said.
