AI Project Extended to Enhance Predictions for Drug-Resistant Epilepsy
Researchers at King's College London, led by Professor Mark Richardson, have secured further funding to extend their AI-driven project aimed at identifying risk factors for drug-resistant epilepsy. The project, supported by the Epilepsy Research Institute and Angelini Pharma, will continue for an additional 16 months.
The team has developed advanced AI tools to analyze electronic health records (EHRs) from NHS hospitals. They have already annotated records of 5,556 epilepsy patients and are set to analyze an additional 4,774 records. This large-scale data analysis seeks to uncover previously unidentified risk factors for refractory epilepsy, a condition where seizures persist despite medication.
The extension will allow researchers to expand their dataset and refine AI methodologies, with a goal of analyzing up to 30,000 patient records across three London hospitals. This effort aims to provide deeper insights into the predictors of refractory epilepsy, potentially leading to new prevention strategies and personalized treatment plans.
The Epilepsy Research Institute will continue to oversee the grant and project management. This initiative highlights the collaborative effort to advance epilepsy research through innovative AI technologies and extensive data analysis.
