XEOS Publishes BrIMA Study Showing Improved Breast Surgery Outcomes with Specimen PET-CT

June 19, 2026
XEOS announced the publication of the multicenter BrIMA study in JAMA Surgery, showing that its AURA 10 specimen PET-CT system significantly improved intraoperative margin assessment in breast-conserving surgery.

XEOS announced in a press release the publication of the BrIMA (Breast cancer Intraoperative Margin Assessment) study in JAMA Surgery. The multicenter clinical trial evaluated the use of the AURA 10 specimen PET-CT system during breast-conserving surgery and found that it improved surgeons' ability to identify and manage positive margins.

The study, conducted at six breast cancer centers in Belgium, Germany, and Italy, analyzed 148 patients between June 2022 and March 2025. Invasive ductal carcinoma cases showed an increase in intraoperative success rates from 83.3 percent without intraoperative margin assessment to 95.2 percent with specimen PET-CT imaging. Across all breast cancer subtypes, success rates rose from 76.4 percent to 91.9 percent.

No device-related adverse events were reported, and strong agreement was observed among surgeons interpreting the images. The AURA 10 system provides molecular and three-dimensional imaging of excised specimens directly in the operating room, delivering results in about ten minutes without the need for specimen transport.

The BrIMA findings support the use of specimen PET-CT for providing actionable intraoperative information, potentially reducing the need for reoperations and improving surgical outcomes in breast-conserving procedures.
