OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and UK Technology Secretary Peter Kyle have discussed a potential £2 billion deal to provide ChatGPT Plus access to all UK residents, according to The Guardian. The discussions took place in San Francisco as part of broader talks on collaboration between OpenAI and the UK.

The proposed deal, which would offer free premium access to ChatGPT for the entire UK population, was not taken seriously by Kyle due to its high cost. Despite this, the talks highlight the UK government's enthusiasm for AI, even amidst concerns over the technology's accuracy, privacy, and copyright implications.

OpenAI currently offers both free and subscription-based access to ChatGPT, with the paid version, ChatGPT Plus, priced at $20 per month. The UK is one of OpenAI's top five markets for paid subscriptions. In July, Kyle signed a non-binding agreement with OpenAI to explore the use of AI in UK public services, potentially granting OpenAI access to government data and its software being used in sectors such as education, defense, security, and the justice system.
