Tern has appointed Diana Furchtgott-Roth, a former Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Transportation, to its Advisory Board. This move aims to bolster the company's efforts in advancing its AI-powered navigation system, the Independently Derived Positioning System (IDPS), which offers a satellite-free alternative to traditional GPS. announced in a press release.
Furchtgott-Roth, known for her expertise in transportation policy and infrastructure, has been a strong advocate for resilient navigation technologies. Her appointment comes amid growing geopolitical tensions and the increasing need for reliable navigation systems that are not dependent on satellites.
Tern's IDPS utilizes vehicle sensors and AI to deliver precise navigation without relying on GPS, GNSS, or cellular signals. The system recently achieved a significant milestone by successfully completing a "cold start" test, initializing position without prior knowledge or external signals, as part of a U.S. Department of Transportation contract.
