Synchrony Survey Finds Fraud Protection Could Increase AI Shopping Use
Synchrony and Oxford Economics said in a press release that 67% of surveyed US consumers would use AI shopping tools more if they included fraud protection. Data security mattered to 82% of respondents and transparency about data use mattered to 77%, compared with 58% who prioritized saving time.
Consumers showed more interest in using AI for lower cost tasks. Some 79% would let AI apply discounts, 74% would let it apply rewards, 43% would allow purchases up to a preset limit, and 37% would allow automatic purchases of regularly used products.
For purchases under $50, 47% would let AI suggest options for approval and 34% would let it act based on their preferences and past behavior. For purchases of $5,000 or more, 46% would not use AI.
Technology companies were the most trusted providers of AI shopping assistants at 58%, followed by retailers or brands at 56%. General AI platforms and consumers' primary banks each received 55%, while banks without an existing customer relationship received 38%. The study surveyed 2,000 US consumers in May 2026 and included eight interviews with payments, retail and technology executives.
