Sonair Secures $6M for 3D Ultrasonic Sensors in Robotics

September 19, 2025
Sonair, an Oslo-based sensing technology company, has raised $6 million to expand its 3D ultrasonic sensor technology, ADAR, aimed at enhancing safety in human-robot interactions.

Sonair, an Oslo-based sensing technology company, has raised $6 million from a mix of existing and new international investors. The funding round included participation from Scale Capital and Norway's state-backed Investinor, among others. This investment aims to support the rollout of Sonair's ADAR sensor, a 3D ultrasonic sensor designed to enhance safety in human-robot interactions.

The ADAR sensor, which stands for acoustic detection and ranging, provides precise, real-time 3D spatial awareness, enabling safer operation of autonomous machines in environments shared with humans. This technology is particularly significant for sectors such as logistics and manufacturing, where the demand for safe human-robot collaboration is growing.

Sonair's technology offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional LiDAR systems, using high-frequency sound waves to create a comprehensive understanding of a robot's surroundings. This approach allows for better depth perception and safer navigation, which are critical for the adoption of autonomous robots in various industries.

Following successful pilots with over 30 companies, Sonair is now shipping its ADAR sensors to manufacturers across Asia, Europe, and North America. The new funding will facilitate the company's expansion into global markets and further establish its position in the field of robotic perception.
