SoftBank Nears $40 Billion Investment in OpenAI
SoftBank is reportedly close to finalizing a $40 billion primary investment in OpenAI, which would value the AI company at $300 billion post-money. The investment is expected to be disbursed over the next 12 to 24 months, with the first payment anticipated in the spring.
This funding round would make SoftBank the largest investor in OpenAI, surpassing Microsoft's previous $13 billion investment. The funds are expected to support OpenAI's commitment to the Stargate project, a joint venture with SoftBank and Oracle aimed at developing advanced AI infrastructure in the U.S.
The investment is contingent on OpenAI restructuring into a for-profit entity. This move aligns with SoftBank's broader strategy of investing in transformative technologies, as seen with its Vision Fund. The Stargate project, announced by President Donald Trump, plans to invest billions in U.S. AI infrastructure.
Neither SoftBank nor OpenAI has publicly confirmed the details of the investment, but both companies have acknowledged their collaboration on the Stargate initiative. The deal, if completed, would significantly alter the landscape of AI investments, positioning SoftBank as a major player in the sector.
