SmartSpires Project Launches AI Smart City Services in Luxembourg

Gcore has announced the launch of the SmartSpires project, a €3.1 million initiative co-funded by the EU's Connecting Europe Facility, aimed at transforming Luxembourg's Belval campus into a smart city living lab. In a press release, it was detailed that the project will leverage 5G, edge computing, and IoT technologies to enhance urban services.
The SmartSpires project is a collaboration between public and private entities, including 5SKYE, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology, and Orange Luxembourg. The initiative will deploy smart towers equipped with 5G connectivity and IoT sensors to support real-time data processing and decision-making, aiming to improve mobility, safety, and sustainability in urban environments.
Four key use cases are being developed, focusing on mobility services, crowd analytics, and waste management. These applications will utilize the project's infrastructure to optimize public transportation, enhance public safety, and improve waste collection processes. The project serves as a model for other European cities looking to integrate advanced digital infrastructure for smarter urban management.
