Pusan National University Develops AI Ship Navigation Framework
Pusan National University researchers have developed an AI framework for ship navigation that uses real time weather data to recommend routes and speed profiles, announced in a press release.
The system combines sparse environmental sensor data, physics informed deep learning, and multi objective Bayesian optimization. It reconstructs airflow fields, predicts how ship exhaust moves under changing weather, and identifies navigation options that balance fuel use with peak pollutant exposure near coastal communities.
The research team tested the framework in several navigation scenarios, including simulations near Busan Port. Compared with conventional navigation strategies, the approach improved optimization performance by 20 to 35% and reduced peak pollutant exposure by 34 to 78%.
