Oversight Board Calls for Independent AI Governance
The Oversight Board calls on AI companies and policymakers to create independent governance bodies, according to an open letter published by the organization. It says effective oversight requires public reasoning, international human rights standards and experts from fields including cybersecurity, privacy and child safety.
The proposed bodies would operate separately from the companies they oversee, control their own budgets and receive access to nonpublic information. They would also have authority to start investigations and require companies to make changes.
The board based its recommendations on six years overseeing content decisions at Meta, during which it published 273 decisions and issued 364 recommendations. It identified its focus on a single company as a limitation and urged AI companies to establish shared standards and industrywide oversight.
