OpenAI Plans to Transform ChatGPT into an Operating System

October 08, 2025
OpenAI's Nick Turley aims to evolve ChatGPT into an operating system with third-party app integration, enhancing user interaction and expanding its ecosystem.

Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT at OpenAI, has announced plans to transform ChatGPT into a new type of operating system. This transformation aims to integrate third-party apps, drawing inspiration from web browsers that have become central to user interaction with software.

OpenAI is reportedly developing a browser and collaborating with designers on hardware devices, indicating a broader strategy to embed ChatGPT into various consumer technologies. This initiative follows previous efforts like the GPT Store and ChatGPT plugins, which did not achieve significant traction.

The integration of apps from companies such as Expedia, DoorDash, and Uber is expected to turn ChatGPT into an e-commerce hub, allowing OpenAI to capture revenue from transactions. This approach also provides developers with access to ChatGPT's 800 million weekly users, enabling them to create interactive experiences beyond traditional chatbots.

OpenAI is considering allowing companies to pay for priority app placement within ChatGPT, though it is still determining how to balance this with user experience. The company is also exploring ways to manage user data access, ensuring transparency and privacy while enabling developers to build effective applications.
