OpenAI Reportedly Developing Generative Music Tool

October 26, 2025
OpenAI is reportedly developing a new AI tool capable of generating music from text and audio prompts, potentially rivaling startups like Suno and Udio. The company is said to be collaborating with Juilliard School students to create training data for the model.

OpenAI is developing a new artificial intelligence tool that can generate music based on text and audio prompts, according to The Information. The company is said to be working with students from the Juilliard School to annotate music scores, providing training data for the system.

The tool could allow users to add musical elements such as guitar accompaniment to vocal tracks or background music to videos. It remains unclear whether the feature will be integrated into existing products like ChatGPT or the video-generation app Sora, or released as a standalone application.

Before ChatGPT, OpenAI launched generative music models including MuseNet in 2019 and Jukebox in 2020, though they are no longer publicly available. The new project would place OpenAI in competition with generative music startups such as Suno and Udio, both of which offer subscription-based AI music generation.

The company has not commented on the timing or structure of its music AI plans. The report also noted that OpenAI may need to navigate copyright issues similar to those faced by other AI music developers currently in litigation with major record labels.
