OpenAI is poised to become a primary anchor tenant in a massive 5-gigawatt data center campus in Abu Dhabi, . The project, developed in partnership with Abu Dhabi-based tech conglomerate G42, is part of OpenAI's ambitious Stargate initiative, which aims to build large-scale data centers globally to support AI development.

The planned facility will span 10 square miles and consume power equivalent to five nuclear reactors, making it one of the largest AI infrastructure projects worldwide. This Middle Eastern campus will significantly surpass the capacity of OpenAI's first Stargate campus in Abilene, Texas, which is expected to reach 1.2 gigawatts.

OpenAI's involvement in the UAE project highlights the company's strategic expansion into the Middle East, building on its 2023 partnership with G42. The collaboration is part of a broader framework to enhance AI collaboration between the US and UAE, despite some concerns from US officials about the strategic implications of sharing advanced US technology with entities that have historical ties to China.
