Old Dominion University and Google Public Sector Launch AI Incubator
Old Dominion University (Old Dominion University) and Google Public Sector have launched an AI incubator called MonarchSphere, announced in a press release. The multi-year initiative is designed to embed artificial intelligence into the university’s research, teaching, and operations, establishing a model for AI-powered innovation in higher education.
MonarchSphere uses Google Cloud’s AI tools, including Vertex AI, Gemini models, and agentic AI services, as a centralized hub connecting academic, research, and administrative systems. The incubator supports faster research through cloud-based computational power, reducing AI and data project runtimes from weeks to days. It also forms part of the Google AI for Education Accelerator, giving students and faculty access to AI training and career certificate programs.
The university is introducing AI-powered tools to assist with course development and advising. These include a transcript evaluation system that aligns coursework with career pathways and generative AI tools like Gemini Pro and Notebook LM to streamline course design. ODU faculty are also piloting Google Colab Enterprise for advanced AI coursework, enabling students to train deep learning models using high-performance GPUs.
Beyond campus, MonarchSphere will extend its resources to local communities and small businesses in Virginia, providing access to AI technologies that improve operations and efficiency.
