Microsoft is reportedly in advanced discussions with OpenAI to secure ongoing access to the AI company's technology, even if OpenAI achieves artificial general intelligence (AGI), according to Bloomberg. This potential agreement would address a significant hurdle in OpenAI's transition to a for-profit enterprise.

The current contract between the two companies stipulates that Microsoft's access to OpenAI's technology could be limited if OpenAI declares it has reached AGI. The ongoing negotiations aim to redefine these terms, ensuring Microsoft retains access to OpenAI's models and technology beyond the current agreement, which expires in 2030.

The discussions have been positive, but challenges remain, including regulatory scrutiny and a lawsuit from Elon Musk, an early OpenAI backer. Microsoft, which has invested $13.75 billion in OpenAI, seeks a larger stake in the restructured company and aims to maintain its strategic advantage by integrating OpenAI's technology into its products like Azure OpenAI Service and Copilot.

Both companies are working towards an agreement that could be finalized in the coming weeks, with Microsoft potentially securing an equity stake in the low- to mid-30% range. This deal would not only ensure continued access to OpenAI's technology but also allow Microsoft to benefit from OpenAI's shift to a more traditional corporate structure.
