Microsoft Opens Atlanta Fairwater AI Superfactory
Microsoft has unveiled its new Fairwater AI datacenter in Atlanta, Georgia, announced in a company blog post. The site is part of the Azure AI superfactory network, which connects multiple Fairwater locations to form what Microsoft calls the world’s first planet-scale AI infrastructure.
The Atlanta facility is purpose-built for high-density AI workloads, integrating hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs into a single flat network. Each rack houses up to 72 GPUs linked via NVLink, providing 1.8 TB of GPU-to-GPU bandwidth. The datacenter’s two-story design minimizes cable lengths to reduce latency and improve cluster performance.
Fairwater uses a closed-loop liquid cooling system that reuses water continuously after an initial fill equivalent to the annual use of about 20 homes. This system enables rack-level power densities of up to 140 kW, supporting sustained large-scale AI training operations.
The Atlanta site connects to other Fairwater datacenters through a dedicated AI Wide Area Network spanning over 120,000 miles of fiber. This network allows dynamic allocation of AI workloads across sites, linking training, fine-tuning, and reinforcement learning jobs into a unified supercomputing system used by partners such as OpenAI.
