Microsoft Commits $10 Billion to AI Infrastructure and Workforce Development in Japan
Microsoft announced a $10 billion investment in Japan to be deployed between 2026 and 2029. The plan focuses on three areas: expanding AI infrastructure, strengthening cybersecurity collaboration, and developing the national workforce. The initiative builds on the company’s $2.9 billion investment in Japan in 2024.
The technology component includes new partnerships with Sakura Internet and SoftBank to provide GPU-based AI computing services through Microsoft Azure while ensuring data remains within Japan. These efforts aim to support domestic development of large language models and AI applications in robotics and manufacturing.
In cybersecurity, Microsoft will expand cooperation with Japan’s National Cybersecurity Office and National Police Agency, focusing on threat intelligence sharing and disruption of cybercrime networks. The company will also launch a $1 million research grant program and fellowship initiative to support AI-driven scientific research across Japanese universities.
On workforce development, Microsoft plans to train one million engineers and developers by 2030 in collaboration with Fujitsu, Hitachi, NEC, NTT Data, and SoftBank. Additional programs will extend AI training to 580,000 workers through the Japanese Electrical Electronic and Information Union and expand AI education initiatives in the Kyushu semiconductor region.
The investment is designed to align with Japan’s national priorities in technology growth, economic security, and workforce readiness, reinforcing Microsoft’s long-term role in the country’s digital transformation.
