Michael J. Fox Foundation Renames Landmark Parkinson's Study to Focus on Precision Medicine
The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research has renamed its long-running Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative to the Parkinson's Precision Medicine Initiative, announced in a press release. The change reflects a move toward research focused on individual biological differences in Parkinson's disease.
Launched in 2010, the study has expanded into a global effort with more than 4,200 in-clinic participants across 50 sites in 12 countries, along with over 47,000 online participants contributing data through its digital platform. The initiative has collected biological samples and data from tens of thousands of participants, creating one of the most comprehensive Parkinson's datasets available.
Recent scientific advances, including the validation of the alpha-synuclein seed amplification assay using study samples, now allow researchers to detect Parkinson's-related biology before symptoms appear. This approach supports the development of precision medicine treatments tailored to individual patients rather than a single model for all.
Over the past 15 years, the foundation has invested more than 800 million dollars in building this dataset, which has been downloaded over 50 million times by researchers worldwide. The initiative continues to evolve through its digital hub, my PPMI, allowing participants to contribute health data remotely and engage directly in ongoing research.
