Meta Acquires Voice AI Startup PlayAI
Meta AI has acquired PlayAI, a startup known for its AI-generated human-like voices, according to TechCrunch. The acquisition is part of Meta's ongoing efforts to strengthen its artificial intelligence capabilities.
The entire PlayAI team is set to join Meta next week, as confirmed by an internal memo. They will report to Johan Schalkwyk, who recently joined Meta from another voice AI startup. The memo highlighted that PlayAI's expertise in creating natural voices aligns well with Meta's roadmap for AI Characters, Meta AI, Wearables, and audio content creation.
Financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed. This move follows Meta's recent strategic investments and hires in the AI sector, including a significant stake in Scale AI and the recruitment of top talent from OpenAI.
