Linux Foundation Launches Appia Foundation for AI Conformity Standards

The Linux Foundation has announced the formation of the Appia Foundation under the Joint Development Foundation to create open modular specifications and standardized conformity assessment frameworks across the AI value chain, according to a press release.

The Appia Foundation will provide an open connecting layer with testing criteria, evaluation guidelines, and component typologies to verify and audit AI models, systems, and applications. The specifications are organized into two layers: Requirements and Guidance, and Assessment Enablement.

The initiative is supported by a wide range of founding members including Arm, Armilla AI, Ericsson, Google, Mastercard, Microsoft, Mitsubishi Electric, Naaia, Nemko, Omron, OpenAI, Schneider Electric, and Siemens. The foundation aims to build a vendor-neutral environment that enables consistent evaluation of trusted AI across different sectors.

Appia’s framework builds on international standards such as ISO and IEC, translating global regulatory requirements into practical and verifiable specifications for AI systems and processes.
