Dr. Joy Buolamwini Joins Legal Defense Fund Board of Directors
The Legal Defense Fund (LDF) has elected Dr. Joy Buolamwini, founder of Algorithmic Justice League, to its Board of Directors, announced in a press release. Dr. Buolamwini, a leading researcher on algorithmic bias and digital equity, joins the Board as LDF continues its work addressing the impact of artificial intelligence on Black communities.
Dr. Buolamwini is known for her landmark research "Gender Shades," which examined racial and gender bias in facial recognition systems and influenced major technology companies to halt law enforcement sales of such tools. She is also the author of *Unmasking AI: My Mission to Protect What Is Human in a World of Machines* and a fellow at the University of Oxford’s Institute for Ethics in AI.
LDF President and Director-Counsel Janai Nelson said Dr. Buolamwini’s expertise will help guide the organization’s governance and strategy as it engages with emerging AI-related civil rights issues. Founded in 1940, LDF remains focused on advancing racial justice through litigation, advocacy, and research, including work on technological inequity through its Thurgood Marshall Institute.
