IBM and the U.S. Department of Commerce have signed a Letter of Intent to create an American quantum chip foundry, announced in a press release. The initiative will establish a new IBM company named Anderon, which will be the first pure-play quantum foundry in the United States.

The project will be supported by $1 billion in CHIPS incentives from the Department of Commerce, matched by an additional $1 billion investment from IBM. The company will also contribute intellectual property, assets, and workforce resources to Anderon. Additional investors are expected as the company expands.

Anderon will be headquartered in Albany, New York, and will operate a 300 millimeter quantum wafer facility. The foundry aims to support the production of advanced quantum wafers for a range of companies and strengthen U.S. leadership in quantum technology and manufacturing.
