The Hong Kong Government has launched a $3 billion AI Subsidy Scheme to support local universities, research institutes, and enterprises in using Cyberport’s AI Supercomputing Centre for AI development. The University of Hong Kong is among the participants, developing a generative AI capable of real-time 3D scene creation.

The Hong Kong Government has launched a $3 billion AI Subsidy Scheme to strengthen the city’s artificial intelligence ecosystem. The three-year program supports local universities, research institutes, and enterprises in using the computing power of Cyberport’s AI Supercomputing Centre (AISC) to drive AI research and innovation.

Around 20 projects from universities, institutions, and companies have already been approved for funding, with subsidies covering about 70% of service costs. The AISC began operations in December 2024 and currently operates at an average utilisation rate of nearly 80%.

Among the funded projects, the University of Hong Kong’s Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering has developed a generative AI system capable of real-time 3D scene generation. The system can turn spoken or written concepts into visual renderings, with potential applications in interior design, video game development, and professional presentations.

The research team is also focusing on model compression to make the technology compatible with mobile phones and desktop computers, aiming to expand accessibility. Cyberport stated that the supercomputing centre is designed to reduce both cost and time barriers for AI developers and plans to introduce more diverse AI models to support local industry growth.
